TORQUAY United were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at Welling on Christmas Sunday, despite a fierce second-half assault on the home goal.
The Gulls welcomed back defender Aaron Downes after his recent suspension and the back-line held firm throughout against a Welling side that has only lost once at home all season.
The Wings were the better side in the first period and United had to survive chances that fell to Joe Healy and Charlie Penny before manager Chris Hargreaves could regroup his players at the half-time break.
United surged forward in the second-half and went close through Ashley Yeoman, Louis Briscoe and Ryan Bowman. Welling then had to thank Healy for a goal-line clearance that denied Jordan Chapell on 65 minutes.
Goalkeeper Jordan Seabright did make a late save for the Gulls but Hargreaves was mainly left to regret the missed opportunities. “We had some good chances in the second-half but don’t seem to have that confidence to put the ball in the net,” he said.
