The Gulls take on the Bluebirds in Cumbria

PLAYER-manager Kevin Nicholson has predicted a tough battle ahead of United’s National League encounter with Barrow A.F.C at the Furness Building Society Stadium.

United go into Saturday’s match after securing a point against play-off chasing Macclesfield at home last Saturday. The Bluebirds will present a different challenge as player-manager Kevin Nicholson spells out.

“We know exactly what we are going to get at Barrow,” said Nicholson.

“They’re going to be direct; they’re going to be hard working. They are a team that whether they are winning or losing, that ball is going to be put into your box as many times as it can be for 90 minutes. They’re not going to try anything clever passing it around the back and break through the lines passing on the floor. They are going to get it up there as quick as they can. They are going to try and bully you physically and do that from minute 1 to minute 95.”

Despite Barrow having to deal with a few suspensions, Nicholson doesn’t believe it will weaken them that much. Midfielder Akil Wright was sent off in Barrow’s 1-0 win over Macclesfield Town in midweek.

“They have a big enough squad that is full enough of quality that it’s not like they are going to be vastly weakened. It doesn’t change what we have to do.”

United look in fairly good shape as they prepare to take on the Bluebirds. Shaun Harrad misses out once again on compassionate leave. New work experience loan signing Gianni Crichlow will be vying for a place in the matchday squad.

Barrow sit in the fourth and final play-off place in the National League and have one of the best defences in the league having only conceded thirty-two goals so far this season.

The last time we met Barrow was earlier in the season when we shared a point at Plainmoor. A 39th minute solo strike by Brett Williams was cancelled out by a last-minute equalizer by Barrow’s Richie Bennett.
