United travel to the New Lawn to complete doubleheader

After Monday’s 4-3 win over the Green, Kevin Nicholson takes his team to Gloucester on New Year’s Day in an effort to complete another double over a team high up in the table as United take on Forest Green at the New Lawn.

Giancarlo Gallifuoco misses out on the game as he awaits the results of a scan to assess the injury he picked up in the reverse fixture. Millwall loanee Paul Rooney is a possible starter after coming on for Gallifuoco on Boxing Day.

Player-manager Kevin Nicholson is expecting a different type of game this time around.

“I’d be amazed if it was 4-3 again, but never say never in football” said Nicholson.

“I guarantee that they [FGR] will have a different approach. Listening to Mark Cooper’s comments [after the game] he wants to get back to basics. As good a passing team as Forest Green have been this season so far, when you get this this time of year and the pitches aren’t as good as what they were and the pressure starts to build because they are expected to be up there for promotion – that passing football becomes that more difficult. They’re trying to find that balance between get the ball out of the danger but keeping their identity as a footballing side.

As the return fixture comes so quickly, is there a danger that Rovers will have extra incentive and motivation to perform better? The Gaffer doesn’t think that the proximity will be a telling factor.

“It makes no difference; you have to play them twice. You’ll always remember results when you are not happy with them. We’ve got one or two teams that we are yet to play [again] that we ‘owe one’ to.

“Both teams will know each other well. Forest Green are in a position where they can change several players. We’re not so much, but we will be very clear on what their players can go and we’ll have our game plan. If we go there and do it, like I’ve said before, I think we’ll give anyone a game.”
