Martin Ling gives his verdict on the 3-0 friendly win over the Royal Marines

UNITED manager Martin Ling has enjoyed a contented weekend after the Gulls swept to a 3-0 win over the Royal Marines on Friday night.

Danny Stevens, Eunan O'Kane and Lee Mansell scored the goals in the opening friendly of pre-season, which came after four extraordinarily tough days of training with the Marines.

Martin was naturally delighted to come through the game with no fitness concerns and he plans a similar strategy of playing a different 11 players in each half for the friendly with Tiverton at Plainmoor on Tuesday night.

"The best result from Friday was to come through the game with no injuries," said Martin. "We got everything we expected and hoped for from the game.

"We missed a few chances but I won't be worrying about that at this early stage. It was all about fitness and we certainly looked fit, if not sharp.

"Everybody did a decent job, including the new faces. We had a young lad called Jake Hutchings at centre-back, who is a first-year scholar and only 16, and he did well.

"Tom Cruise acquitted himself well, Craig Easton did what Craig Easton does in that midfield role, Michael Poke did everything required of him and Billy Bodin went past people and had some shots.

"We had a massively hard five days last week and the lads deserved a weekend off. We are back to work this morning and will train again tomorrow before the Tiverton game, when I will again play two different sides in each half."
