IAN Morris scored twice, including one stunner, as United swept past Bideford in a pre-season friendly at The Sports Ground on Friday night.
Ryan Jarvis, Brian Saah and Rene Howe were also on target for the Gulls, who are now showing the sharpness needed for the season ahead after three gruelling weeks of training.
Manager Martin Ling was also able to cast a watchful eye over a trio of trialists in George Artemi, Jerel Ifil and Carl Baker.
“It was a very good performance in the first half and we were 4-0 up by the break,” said Martin. “The first goal from Jarvis was a speculative strike the ‘keeper probably should have saved.
“We then scored two from set-plays after excellent deliveries by Kevin Nicholson. Saah and Morris scored headers, and then Morris cracked a wonderful goal from 25 yards into the top corner. We completely changed the team at half-time and Rene scored after a great ball from Niall Thompson.
“It was good to see Morro score a header because he is always one of our top five headers when we’re picking up for a defensive set-piece and he has a fair share of opportunities attacking the ball at the other end. His second goal was a super strike as well, so it was nice for him.
“The three trialists all did the job required. Jerel played the full 90 minutes because he’s not had a lot of football recently and the other two played 45 minutes each. They were all part of a good team unit on the night.
“It was obviously a tough game for Bideford because we are now really tapering toward the first game of the season against Leicester in 10 days time.
“We are back into work on Sunday and will treat the visit of Stoke on Monday like any normal game, so we will train properly the day before and I will name the team. It will be like the Leeds game with players laying a bit longer than just a half.”
