Lingy aiming for the top

ON the eve of our first competitive game of the campaign against Leicester in the Capital One Cup, the target for United this season is to complete the promotion job.

After reaching the play-offs in successive seasons, the Gulls are aiming one step higher and manager Martin Ling believes we can continue defying the financial odds.

“We have reached the play-offs in the last two years and not gone on to finish the job,” he said. “I will set my sights at top three for this year with the play-offs as a safety valve, but I do that every season.

“If you don’t set out to finish where success lies, i.e. the top three, you are selling yourself short. We are not top-three or play-off payers but that doesn’t mean we can’t repeat what we have done in this last two years.

“I actually had a text from a mate saying the Racing Post had tipped us an outside bet for winning the league at 25/1. The club has been successful over the last two years and we want to continue with that.

“The aim is to try and get out of this league.”
