DESPITE only being 20 years-old, Anthony O’Connor already has a full season of League 2 football under his belt.
The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international joined United in a one-month loan deal from Blackburn earlier this week and looks set to immediately replace injured centre-back Aaron Downes.
O’Connor spent the whole of last year on loan at Burton Albion, where he showed his versatility by mainly operating as a right-back.
‘’We were desperate for a centre-half after the news of Downes, so we had to move quickly,’’ said United manager Alan Knill.
‘’He is a lad I have seen and Brassy [assistant manager Chris Brass] has seen as well, playing for Blackburn at centre-half, although he spent last season at right-back, playing 46 games for Burton.
‘’We know he can comfortably play at centre-half and we have some connections in the North-West, so we made a couple of phone calls and full credit to the lad for saying yes straightaway.
‘’Blackburn were happy to let him come and we’re happy to have Anthony here.’’
