United boss Paul Buckle was delighted with his team's display in their latest friendly, a 1-0 win at Plainmoor against League 1 Brighton: 'I'm pleased with the whole performance because Brighton was excellent opposition for us and there was a good tempo to the game. It didn't seem like a pre-season friendly, in the first forty seconds I think four tackles went flying in and that gave an indication of what was ahead.
'I was really pleased with the players, I thought with and without the ball we were organized and probably could have scored a couple more goals and I'm delighted the (Scott) Rendell has come in and scored, it looked at times as though he had been with us for two years!'
'Scott has travelled down today from up country which wasn't an ideal preparation for him but he was desperate to play and I'm glad I started with him. Scott has the mentality we are looking for and he will fit in well. He has something to prove, he can score goals and has the right attitude.'
Paul was very pleased with the summer preparations so far, especially the home performances: 'The players have been doing everything right for the last two years and the key is to continue doing the right things. I have asked the players for some tempo and realism over the last week or so and to be disciplined - all things that we are going to have to do when the season proper begins.'
'The pre-season has gone well, even tonight after making so many changes I said to the guys that came on that they did very well because being a substitute isn't easy. Coming on when the team has done so well and keeping the lead and competing like they did was very good effort. The whole squad looks up for the challenge.'
The Gulls boss explained that Tim Sills has only just returned to training after over a week resting an injury so the wait for someone like Scott Rendell was an important one: 'I didn't want to risk Tim playing from the start and it was interesting to see Rendell play because when Sillsy has been missing recently we have struggled to score goals. I'm glad I waited for Scott because getting a decent big man is difficult. Getting a striker who is six foot plus and mobile is very hard but with Tim back fit and Elliot getting in behind we are a threat.'
Bucks also commented on the positive way that Peterborough United contributed to the signing of Scott Rendell: 'Barry Fry has been first class and Peterborough have given us a very good deal and we are thankful for that. They showed great understanding with our situation and it is testament to Torquay United that we can get players like Scott at our club, we try and do things the right way here and I'm sure Scott will be good for us and it will be good for him to play here.'
