United kept up the pressure on Blue Square Premier leaders Aldershot with a hard fought 1-0 win at Plainmoor against Kidderminster.
It wasn't pretty but at this stage the result is everything and Paul Buckle will be delighted that the three points were secured against a Kidderminster team that battled to match United but were punished for a lack of concentration when it mattered.
The visitors packed the midfield with a 4-5-1 formation in a bid to crowd out United's forward play and, to a certain extent, it worked. The match never really got going in terms of flowing football in what were perfect conditions and the first real shot at goal came in the 11th minute when Chris Zebroski hit a snap shot on the turn from twenty yards but the ball went harmlessly over the crossbar. Tim Sills had an outstanding game and in amongst some fine play he released Kaid Mohamed midway through the half and Mohamed was unlucky with his cross shot that nearly beat MacKenzie at his near post. Both sides were putting in plenty of effort but the final pass was letting them down; Steve Adams did produce an excellent centre for Tim Sills but Tim's header lobbed high over the goal. The visitors weren't offering much in the way of attacking intent although Bennet produced a strong run and a cross shot that wasn't far away from Michael Pokes left hand upright.
Along with a booking for Kidderminster's Hurran we all thought that was about it for the first half, the main positive being United looking solid enough at the back which is becoming a good habit in recent weeks. An early goal for United at the start of the second half would have been very welcome but one in the third minute of added time in the first half would be manna from Heaven and skipper for the day Mark Ellis duly obliged. Roscoe Dsane did well at the second attempt to get himself enough space to whip the ball across the six yard box from an angle and Ellis, who had stayed up from an earlier throw-in, was perfectly placed to flick the ball in from 2 yards.
What would Kidderminster do in the second half now; would they come out and push for the equalizer? Well, not really, although they nearly drew level five minutes in to the second period when Christie was put in by Russell and only 10 yards out looked like scoring were it not for the alert Michael Poke who came off his line to block well with his feet and deflect the ball away. The second half was much the same as the first with lots of effort but little end product.
Steve Adams slipped a neat pass through a mass of players to release Chris Zebroski with twenty minutes left but Chris's shot was a touch weak and straight at MacKenzie. Lee Phillips had replaced Dsane earlier in the half and was his usual self, being strong and direct which almost brought him his reward when he got himself wide inside the area but pulled his shot past the far post. The most worrying moment of the final moments was what looked like a bad injury sustained by Tim Sills, he received lengthy treatment before walking gingerly off and being replaced by Matt Hockley. Thankfully the injury is just a bad knock to his ribs and Tim should be fine for the Weymouth match. As news filtered through of Aldershot's away win the final whistle went and relief was probably the first reaction of most at Plainmoor, job done, three points, move on to the next match…..
