United ran out 3-0 winners in their penultimate summer friendly and it was very much a repeat of the sterling efforts so far as another committed and professional performance was provided for the watching crowd. The Weston line-up contained two players with United connections in defender Matt Villis & midfielder Danny Wring and they featured well during an even first half.

The first chance of the match didn't come for fifteen minutes but it did fall United's way. A fine left foot cross from Kevin Nicholson out on the left touchline was met by Martin Gritton but his glancing header was narrowly wide of the far post.

Eunan O'Kane almost broke the deadlock after a good flick-on by Martin Gritton but although Eunan's left footed effort beat Irish in the home goal it also beat the right hand post and went out for a goal kick.

United were looking to pass the ball quickly and mix things between some 'carpet' football and a more direct approach up to Martin Gritton. The surface was very good and it was clearly suiting Kevin Nicholson who was showing his usual high technical ability at every opportunity.

United finally opened the scoring just after the half hour mark when Martin Gritton headed a high ball toward the Weston goal and with Irish beaten Chris Zebroski to got the final touch from close range. Soon after and Gritton beat Irish to another floated ball but this time his header went a couple of yards over the crossbar.

There were a number of changes at the break for the Gulls; Rowe-Turner for Kevin Nicholson, Kieran Charnock replaced Guy Branston, Damon Lathrope switched with Lee Mansell and Elliot Benyon took the wide right role with Chris Zebroski taking a second half rest.

The second half seemed to be playing out in a similar way to the first with United looking the more dangerous and their better play told just after the hour mark. Billy Kee found himself in a wide right position and swung a pinpoint cross over for Elliot Benyon who scored from yen yards with a diving header. United's better quality in the final third was proving the difference between the sides.

Saul Halpin was introduced shortly after the second goal when he replaced skipper Nicky Wroe and took up a central position behind the forwards. Billy Kee & Elliot Benyon were filling the wider forward positions with Martin Gritton the central striker.

United were dominating now and a third goal came with a quarter of an hour left for play. Matt Villis was caught on the ball by a combination of Elliot Benyon & Eunan O'Kane on the edge of the Weston area and the ball was quickly squared to Martin Gritton who side-stepped Irish and rolled the ball home.

United had reverted back to a 4-4-2 formation by now with Lloyd Macklin & Saul Halpin occupying the wide roles. Weston had now almost ceased to exist as an attacking force as United's fitness and dominance with ball really began to tell.

Another solid performance from United with Martin Gritton leading the line very well, Mark Ellis strong at the back and Eunan O'Kane looking busy and once again the whole squad produced a professional performance as they head toward the final pre-season match of the summer on Saturday against Yeovil at Plainmoor.
