A goal in each half from Grimsby Town saw Torquay United go down 2-0 at Blundell Park. Striker Isaiah Rankin gave the Mariners the lead in the 18th minute before Nicky Fenton doubled their advantage in the second half. The result was the Gulls first away defeat since Lubos Kubik took charge at the end of November.

Lubos Kubik made several changes to the side that played Boston United at Plainmoor as Matt Villis, Lee Thorpe and Jamie Ward dropped to the bench. Matt Hockley, Kevin Hill and Chris McPhee returned to the Gulls starting line-up whilst Stevland Angus moved into the back four.

Torquay made a patient start to the game and kept possession well. They created a number of chances as Jordan Robertson forced a save from Phil Barnes and Kevin Hill went close when he headed a Lee Mansell cross wide.

The Gulls were dealt a cruel blow in the 18th minute when Isaiah Rankin netted for the Mariners after the Torquay defence failed to clear their lines.

Chris McPhee went close for the Gulls as he turned and shot at goal and forced a save from Phil Barnes as they looked to get back on level terms.

At the other end of the pitch, Matt Hockley produced a goal saving clearance to keep the Mariners at bay.

Jordan Robertson threatened with a free-kick on the edge of the Grimsby penalty. Barnes had to be at his best to deny the Sheffield United loanee from bringing Torquay back on level terms.

A Grimsby attack saw a shot from winger Nick Hegarty comfortably collected by Gulls keeper Nathan Abbey.

Torquay's dominance won a number of corners just before half-time, but they failed to penetrate the Grimsby net.

After the break, Torquay started well as Jordan Robertson threatened for the Gulls when he beat two players, before being stopped in his tracks by Mariners defender Nicky Fenton.

The Gulls won a free-kick on the edge of the Grimsby penalty area following a challenge on Adam Murray. Robertson stepped up to take the free-kick, which he fired over the bar.

A chance fell to Chris McPhee after he latched on to a through ball from Murray, but he failed to find the back of the net.

Isaiah Rankin fired over the cross bar for the Mariners with an overhead effort.

A double substitution in the 59th minute saw Lee Thorpe and Jamie Ward brought on in place of Jordan Robertson and Kevin Hill as the Gulls looked to press home for the equaliser.

However, Grimsby were gaining the upper hand and Martin Paterson went close as he won the Mariners a corner after his shot was deflected wide. Shortly afterwards he beat Stevland Angus and blasted his effort over the bar.

Torquay refused to give up and were nearly rewarded when a Jamie Ward shot almost found the back of the net after linking up well with Murray.

With 15 minutes to go, Lubos made his third and final change as he brought Carl Motteram on for Matt Hockley as the Gulls continued their search for an equaliser.

Chris McPhee found himself in a good position to score, but he couldn't find the target.

The play then switched to the other end of the pitch as the Mariners won a corner and Nicky Fenton headed home Grimsby's second goal of the game in the 78th minute to double their advantage.

Martin Paterson, who was posing all sorts of problems for Torquay's defence, went close again for the Mariners, but he was denied by Nathan Abbey.

The Gulls were unable to find their way back into the game as they slipped to their first away defeat under Lubos Kubik.
