Kyle Cameron has taken to life at Torquay United well. Moving from a big club like Newcastle United could take a young player time to adjust. Not a bit or the 21-year-old that is fresh from pulling on the captain’s armband for the last two games.

Manager Gary Johnson obviously sees an old head on young shoulders when deciding who would take the role in the short-term in the absence of Asa Hall.

“He pulled me aside before the Wealdstone game and told me I was going to be captain for the game. That was it, really, nothing too specific. Whenever we’re having conversations, he always seems to get me involved. It’s good that the Gaffer gets me involved and that he has that trust in me, even though I am still only a young lad. He treats me like a senior member of the squad which I value and appreciate.”

The first of Cameron’s games as skipper resulted in three points away to Wealdstone. The point picked up at Weston-super-Mare was a disappointment as the team failed to reach the high standards it has set recently.

“We got a good three points away from home against a Wealdstone team that were sitting 4th at that point. We knew it was going to be a tough game.

“We knew the way Weston were going to play but we haven’t faced anyone that plays like that so far this season. They were intent to play out from the back no matter what pressure we put on them. In the first half we were a bit half and half, we didn’t really pressure them with the intensity that we wanted to. Second half we were better and got back on terms quickly. We were possibly a little naïve at points and did things that we normally wouldn’t do and ended up conceding a sloppy second goal stopped us getting three points.

“It was really two points dropped against Weston, but we need to move on to Billericay on Saturday. We need to get back to that momentum that we were starting to build. We need to string three/four wins on the bounce and see where that leaves us.”

Saturday’s game is another big one at Plainmoor. After huge support from the Yellow Army away to Weston the lads are hoping for more of the same at home.

“The match against Billericay is going to be a tough test. We need to assert our authority and show the fans that we’re going to be challenging for the league. Three points will narrow the gap again at the top and keep us in touching distance of all the other teams at the top.”
