Three valuable points were earned on Saturday thanks to a goal apiece from Aaron Barnes and Elliott Romain. The 2-1 win away to Maidenhead gives United renewed hope that National League survival is still a realistic possibility.

Whilst Elliott is used to scoring goals, Barnes scored his first goal of his professional career – and what a goal it was! Barnes received a pass from Luke Young and found the far top corner from cloe to 30 yards out.

“I suppose it wasn’t a bad way to mark my first goal in professional football, especially as it is one area of my game that I’ve been working to improve on,” said Barnes after the final whistle.

“I’m not one that usually tries my luck from range so when it came to me I just thought: why not? Thank God it flew in!”

Despite scoring for the first time, and a magnificent strike at that, Barnes kept his celebration low-key. Focus on the task in hand is needed. Barnes was more pleased with the three points than any personal achievements on the day.

“Obviously I was buzzing, although probably my celebration didn’t show it at the time. It made it worthwhile getting the three points, more importantly.”
