United have the benefit of a quick turnaround in games after Saturday’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Tranmere Rovers.

Gateshead FC come to Plainmoor on Tuesday night for a 7:45pm kick-off. The Heed sit in 15th place in the National League table having recently appointed ex-Newcastle player and Macclesfield Town assistant manager, Steve Watson. He has four wins from his opening nine National League games in charge but they’ll be eager to get back to winning ways after a defeat against Barrow and a draw against Solhull Moors in their last two matches. 774 miles divide the two teams…

The visitors have a fully-fit squad to pick from apart from Scott Barrow (concussion) who was stretchered off in their FA Cup defeat to Luton Town. Midfielder Russell Penn returns for the Heed after serving his suspension.

Torquay United head coach Gary Owers isn’t about forgetting the lessons his team has to learn after Saturday’s match.

“We’re not the type of people, myself and Martin, that just brush things under the carpet, so there has been some feedback given about where we need to improve,” said Owers. “We haven’t got time to dwell on the result because Tuesday is more important now.

“I’m always thinking about the team. Yesterday morning when the lads came in to cool down, a number of players were struggling. Thankfully, that has settled down so we should have a strong squad to pick from. I know which team I’m going to go with.”

The Gaffer has always placed the responsibility on players not in the starting eleven to force their way into the starting line-up.

“The lads that aren’t in the team, they have to influence me by training harder than the lads that are in the team and catching my eye in some way. They can’t just sit around and wait to be picked. I keep saying that, I keep stressing that it is very important that they understand how to get in the team.

“It is always going to be about our performance because we need to win games.”
