United are back into action at Plainmoor on Saturday after a two-week break from fixtures because of the FA Cup weekend.

The first team squad have undergone fitness testing, running drills, and some tough training sessions during the break.

“We’ve just worked hard,” said Torquay United head coach Gary Owers at his weekly press call.

“You always try and focus on the game at the end of the week and that was missing. We went down another root. We got stuck into some really tough physical sessions and I think the players come through that well. This week we’re starting to focus on trying to get organized for the game on Saturday against Maidstone.”

Maidstone are coming off the back of a 4-2 win over League Two side Cheltenham Town in the first round of the Emirates FA Cup. The Stones raced to a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Delano Sam-Yorke, Joe Pigott, and Zavon Hines.

“I went to the game and they deserved to win,” said Gary. “They were very good on the day. They scored at the right times and they were really positive in their play. They went for the win and they got their reward because they scored four goals. Cheltenham came out second half and got an early goal to make it 3-1 and you think “this’ll be interesting” and they went up the other end and scored straight away and it was game over.

“They’re a good attacking team – good at set plays. I think they’ll come here in confident mood after that win. We’ll have to have our wits about us. We’ll have to have a scrap with them at some point if we are going to get the points.”

The Stones will be missing Delano Sam-Yorke after he received a red card in their FA Cup first round win. They currently sit in 5th place in the National League table with 29 points from 17 games. Top goal scorer is Joe Pigott with 8 goals in total this season. They come into this match on a run of six away victories in a row.
