Torquay United is pleased to confirm the signing of goalkeeper, Alex Bass, on a season-long loan deal from League One side, Portsmouth.

Bass, 20, made his first start for Pompey last season in a 2-0 win over Peterborough and then signed a new contract with the club. He has progressed through Portsmouth’s youth age groups and was named on the bench for their youth team at the age of 16 and has been their number two goalkeeper for some time. His debut came in the EFL Cup against Coventry in 2016.

After making the initial break-through in 2016, Bass was loaned to Salisbury and played 37 times for the Whites.

“It’s a great signing,” said TUFC head coach, Gary Owers. “I feel rather fortunate to get him, to be honest.”

“He’s been in and around Portsmouth’s first team squad and he is highly-rated. There was interest from other League clubs to try and sign him. Thankfully, Portsmouth trust us to look after him for the season and I think it could be a massive, massive signing for us.

“It’s not about age, it’s about opportunity. He’s not far away from the first team at Portsmouth and I think he is going to go on and have a very good career and this move is a part of his development. I look forward to seeing him in a Torquay shirt.”
